Tech-Renaissance: The Art of Compliance and the Emergence of RegTech

I really believe that we are in a “New Renaissance”, with technology being our artistic expression. We know that as Technology is advancing, regulators are slowly catching up with trying to regulate it. Regulation Matters, but perhaps more importantly, who gets to make up the regulations matters even more.

Whilst I believe that technology must be deployed in an ethical manner to protect our rights and society, regulations must not be based on advancing political and economic incentives, nor to stifle creativity and innovation… that said, in a recent talk I had the pleasure of speaking with the President and CEO of the Platinum Network, the brilliant Hugo Cuevas-Mohr, I was asked to discuss the “The Art of Compliance and The Emergence of RegTech, below is a written extract of the interview, as well as the video itself. I hope you enjoy and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on who should regulate Technology?

The title of this talk is “The Art of Compliance and The Emergence of RegTech”, Art itself is something that flourished tremendously in the renaissance period back in the middle ages .

As you know The Renaissance was a flourishing period of European cultural, artistic, political and economic “rebirth” following the Middle Ages. Which took place from the 14th century to the 17th century.

The Renaissance promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art. This era also expanded global exploration, opened up new lands and cultures to European commerce. Some of the greatest thinkers, authors, statesmen, scientists and artists in human history were birthed in this era!

Leonardo DaVinci was not only a renowned artis, he was also a great inventor, he invented many things which were the stepping stone to some of the technologies we have today!

We know the Renaissance emerged out of the “Dark Ages” a period that took place between the fall of ancient Rome and the beginning of the 14th century, during that time, Europeans made few advances in science and art. The “Dark Ages,” is an era which is often branded as a time of war, ignorance, famine and pandemics such as the Black Death.

We are in a very interesting time, I would actually say that we are in a New Renaissance, a New Rebirth, but this time our “ART” is expressed through technological advancement that is leading the way.

The massive advances of the last several decades have given us a glimpse into a future previously reserved for science fiction and dreamers. The dreams of yesterday’s Science Fiction, have become today’s reality.

Art is not just an object that hangs in a gallery, the essence of Art is creativity, and creativity births innovation.

In the last year, COVID (our modern day plague) has certainly been a catalyst to this inevitable rebirth, but this is just the beginning.

In the next 3-5 years we will have leaped light years ahead from where we are now, and in 10 years time when we look back we will be amazed at just how far we have advanced- not just on a technological level, but on a global social economic-on every level…

I also don’t think we will have a choice in riding this wave…its something inevitable, and has already started, and I truly believe that like the middle ages we are going From Darkness to Light: and so The New Renaissance Begins and Technology is it’s creative expression…
